Since Ella could hold a brush at age two and a half, she has painted. Based in Vancouver, Canada, Ella primarily plays with acrylics and oils on canvas, and is drawn to the unbuttoned representation of figures, faces, and flesh. She is inspired by movement and familiar moments, painting scenes that flirt with the uncanny.

Ella does not have a formal fine arts education but rather has learned from watching her artist-mother, Tanja Gardner, paint. One of Ella’s earliest memories is painting with her mom at age four, copying her five-foot-tall layered cake onto a much smaller canvas. As the fourth child in her family, observation is the foundation of Ella’s practice and ultimately drives her to create, connecting with her audience through perspective.
